Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said here on Monday that as the nation had declared the current decade as the “Decade of Innovation,” students of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, should find scientific solutions to complex problems ranging from rapid urbanisation to climate change to energy security.

Expressing displeasure over the recent tightening of norms for grant of environment clearance to industrial projects, commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma has urged the environment and forest ministry to issue correctives.In a letter to minister Jayanthi Natarajan, he asked her to “personally intervene” to “allay the misapprehension of the entrepreneurs on environment policy”.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests has justified in the Supreme Court its decision to withdraw environmental clearance granted to the Orissa Mining Corporation (OMC) for a bauxite mining project in Orissa.The court had on August 1 issued notice to the Centre on an application from OMC challenging the July 11 order. The OMC said the order was illegal, arbitrary and in violation of the court’s earlier directions that gave a green signal to the project.

In the recently convened fourth meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM) on the environmental and developmental issues relating to coal mining and other development projects, held under the Chairmanship of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Agriculture Minister, Sharad Pawar observed that the upcoming legislation on land reforms was likely to interfere with land acquisition as well as resettlement and rehabilitation (R&R) issues associated with coal mining in the country.

Heavy industrial pollution has become a bane of Srikakulam district ( Andhra Pradesh) as companies concerned are taking few measures to control air and water pollution in and around their plants. As there is no regional office of the Pollution Control Board in the district, the companies are dilly-dallying over the adoption of advanced and green technology to reduce the pollution levels.

The sea level around the island city is rising by 2.4 mm every year.A study conducted by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) affirms the statistics. The cumulative loss of income and infrastructure damage will aggregate to the tune of Rs 35 lakh crore by 2050.

The explosive growth of cities worldwide over the next two decades poses significant risks to people and the global environment, a new study has claimed. Researchers from Yale, Arizona State, Texas A&M and Stanford universities have predicted that by 2030 urban areas will expand by 590,000 square miles to accommodate the needs of 1.47 billion more people living in urban areas.

SC panel for ban on Karnataka mining -20 Aug 2011, The Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court’s environment panel, Central Empowered Committee (CEC), on Friday concurred with the Karnataka Lokayukta to report rampant illegal iron ore mining in Chitradurga and Tumkur districts and recommended a complete ban on private mining.
