Climate change: India a constructive force in Durban – 9 January 2012, The Economic Times

January 9, 2012 by Climate portal editor Leave a Comment

The Durban conference in December 2011 marked a breakthrough in international efforts to combat climate change. Together, we found the compromise that provided the basis to launch negotiations on a new global legal framework for climate action that the world so badly needs.

Life in the land of the dead – 8 January 2012, DNA

January 9, 2012 by Climate portal editor Leave a Comment

Marubhoomi, the Sanskrit word for desert, means ‘land of the dead’. A cursory glance at any desert would make you believe this term fits well. Vast stretches of sand dunes are dotted with tiny specks of lifeless green. There are mirages that look like water, but there’s not a drop to drink.

January 9, 2012 by Climate portal editor Leave a Comment

India’s forest cover has declined by 367 sq km between 2007 and 2009. While the figure may not seem alarming, it runs counter to the impression that afforestation and conservation programmes are yielding results.

India’s Climate Change Choices – 7 January 2012, The Times of India

January 9, 2012 by Climate portal editor Leave a Comment

The greatest problem facing India is global warming. War, internal subversion and a global economic meltdown are all very serious threats, but they can be stopped or contained. Global warming, on the other hand, seems unstoppable and uncontainable. The outcome of the Durban summit on climate change suggests it is already too late to prevent the two degrees Celsius temperature increase that scientists say is the maximum tolerable.

Climate Conversations – India’s back to the wall at Durban – 6 January 2012, Alert Net News (Reuters)

January 6, 2012 by Climate portal editor Leave a Comment

Of all the baffling goings-on at the recent climate change conference in Durban, what bewildered me most was the position of India. As traditional alliances appeared to fade and new emerge, India appeared allied to the blockers rather than the movers.

Between contemplation and climate

Whether or not the USA, Europe, the Western world, the industrialised Eastern world (China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan), adhere to or not their paltry promises about being more responsible concerning the factors that lead to climate change, is of very little concern to us. We have never set any store by international agreements on climate […]

The ‘Hindu’, ignorant about weather and climate, but runs down IMD

We find objectionable the report by ‘The Hindu’ daily newspaper accusing the India Meteorological Department of scientific shortcoming (‘IMD gets its August forecast wrong’, 1 September 2016). The report claims that the IMD in June 2016 had forecast that rains for August would be more than usual but that the recorded rain was less than […]
