Red-green deal by Praful Bidwai – 11 January 2012, Frontline Publication

January 11, 2012 by Climate portal editor Leave a Comment

It is time to jettison neoliberalism for programmes that combine equity with climate-sensitive schemes for universal public service provision. As global capitalism’s worst crisis in seven decades continues unremittingly, it becomes obvious that the shop-worn solutions recommended by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the United States Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank and other agencies devoted to neoliberal approaches are failing. The combination of austerity, harsh budget cuts, bank bailouts, fresh capital infusion into financial institutions, and further privatisation of public companies and services is just not delivering results.

January 11, 2012 by Climate portal editor Leave a Comment

Scientists on Tuesday pushed the hands of the infamous “Doomsday Clock” forward one minute from last year, signalling their increasing pessimism about the efforts of world leaders to handle global threats. “It is now five minutes to midnight,” the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS) said in a sober assessment of current trends. “Two years ago, it appeared that world leaders might address the truly global threats that we face. In many cases, that trend has not continued or been reversed.”

We have never set any store by international agreements on climate […]

We find objectionable the report by ‘The Hindu’ daily newspaper accusing the India Meteorological Department of scientific shortcoming (‘IMD gets its August forecast wrong’, 1 September 2016). The report claims that the IMD in June 2016 had forecast that rains for August would be more than usual but that the recorded rain was less than […]
