Pakistan wishes to work on climate issue with India – 26 January 2012, The Times of India

Pointing out that Pakistan has “excellent” relationship with India, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday said cooperation between the two to tackle climate change was “doable”. He said Islamabad wants to work with New Delhi on this front.

At 1.3 degrees, Agra coldest in the plains – 25 January 2012, The Times of India

Even as the city remained under the grip of biting cold on Sunday, the minimum temperature dropped to 1.3 degrees Celsius in Agra, which was the lowest in record in the plains of the country.

The setting up of 63 thermal power plants along the coast line of Andhra Pradesh will place this state in the category of one of the biggest carbon emitters in the world. The biggest amongst these power stations is the Krishnapatnam power station which claims it will provide electricity to 7 million homes.

NO2 levels over India increasing, says data – 25 January 2012, The Times of India

The satellite data of tropospheric pollution over Asia shows that there has been a rise in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) level over India and China. It is due to usage of more fossil fuel. At the same time, there is a decline in the level of nitrogen dioxide in Europe and US, said Andreas Richter, senior scientist, University of Bremen, Germany.

Mercury keeps Mumbai guessing – 24 January 2012, The Times of India

The mercury has been playing tricks for the last few days, but don’t start packing away the woollens yet. Chances are the chill is set to return again. This has been an erratic winter for Mumbai, with minimum temperatures fluctuating by about four degrees every two to four days. There has also been a great difference between day and night temperatures on most days.

Leh in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday recorded the lowest temperature of the season at minus 22.2 degrees Celsius as intense cold wave conditions continued across the Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh region.

As several parts of India reel under a cold spell, here’s worse news: expect the rest of the winter to be colder than usual. Experts looking at global climate models say there’s a good chance that February and March too will see below normal temperatures.

Climate opportunities – Fellowships and writing workshops for climate change researchers from South Asia – 23 January 2012

Applications are invited by climate change researchers from South Asia to apply to participate in a new fellowship programme and a residential writing workshop to be organized in South Asia in 2012.
Through fellowships and residential writing workshops, South Asian scientists and social scientists will be trained and supported to:
  • Publish in peer reviewed journals
  • Write for different types of publication aimed at a range of audiences
  • Increase their influence on policy
  • Raise the profile of their research through the media
Applications are open to researchers from Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan who are working on any aspect of climate change research. Participants should be early/mid career researchers, although more established researchers may be considered. Moreover, 80 researchers will be selected to participate in fellowships and writing workshops. Moreover, 20 fellowships will be offered, and 15 participants will be selected for each of four writing workshops.
