Praful Bidwai’s book The Politics of Climate Change and the Global Crisis: Mortgaging Our Future is written at a time of deep diplomatic despondency. It is brutally honest about what is at risk if no action is taken at the national and international level. It exposes the false solution offered by India in its National Action Plan on Climate Change, and its chasing the nuclear mirage as a clean energy option. But most importantly it looks at alternative visions and the role of renewable.

The EU wants countries meeting at a conference in June under the UN’s Rio+20 mechanism to double their share of renewable energy by 2030 under an international obligation. It also wants countries like India to agree to double its energy efficiency levels under an international understanding.

In one of his most emphatic public statements reaffirming the return of ‘equity’ in India’s climate change stance, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said global cooperation on climate change “must be based on the foundation of the right to development and the need for an equitable distribution of burden”.
