Coal India grapples with problems of operational clarity & over-dependency on e-auction-16 November 2011, The Economic Times

November 16, 2011 by Climate portal editor Leave a Comment

Coal India’s production and sales volume in the September quarter declined – both YoY and sequentially – due to the extended monsoon.

Though this was offset by higher realisation from sales per unit, lack of clarity on core operational and regulatory issues still persists. And over-dependence on e-auction sales to drive the total earnings is not sustainable in the long term.

November 15, 2011 by Climate portal editor Leave a Comment

The salt-to-software conglomerate, the Tata Group, is just not content with its substantial presence in Canada’s iron ore mines like Direct Shipping Ore and Taconite projects. Over and above the majority stake in those assets, it wants more and now has its eyes firmly set on the country’s metallurgical coal reserves, too.

State may have to rely on imported coal for new thermal projects-14 November 2011,The Hindu

November 14, 2011 by Climate portal editor Leave a Comment

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) is mulling over the option of using imported coal alone for five of its upcoming thermal projects.

The power utility has been compelled to study the option as Coal India, the major supplier to the TANGEDCO, has pleaded helplessness in providing coal linkage to new projects in view of “acute shortage”, says an official. Environmental clearance, the most important approval for a power project, will be given by the Union government normally after coal linkage is firmed up.

Climate change is framed as an existential threat and if public policy is to be tailored to combat it, the science behind it needs to be explained better so as to build popular support – and to prevent distortion by the sceptics.

November 11, 2011 by Climate portal editor Leave a Comment

Anxiety over nuclear plant safety is driving Tokyo to rethink its earlier strategic energy plan which had envisaged, among other things, boosting the role of atomic power.

The accident at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which led to tens of thousands of people being evacuated from radiation-affected areas in the vicinity, has left its government on the horns of a dilemma. What role should nuclear energy play in the country’s energy mix?

Between contemplation and climate

Whether or not the USA, Europe, the Western world, the industrialised Eastern world (China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan), adhere to or not their paltry promises about being more responsible concerning the factors that lead to climate change, is of very little concern to us. We have never set any store by international agreements on climate […]

The ‘Hindu’, ignorant about weather and climate, but runs down IMD

We find objectionable the report by ‘The Hindu’ daily newspaper accusing the India Meteorological Department of scientific shortcoming (‘IMD gets its August forecast wrong’, 1 September 2016). The report claims that the IMD in June 2016 had forecast that rains for August would be more than usual but that the recorded rain was less than […]
