After two decades working as a Democrat senator in the US Congress – and five years as under secretary of state for global affairs in the Clinton administration – Timothy Wirth quit politics to become president of the United Nations Foundation, a non-profit group established by Ted Turner in 1998. Known for his efforts towards better fuel efficiency and the spread of sustainable energy, Wirth spoke with Subodh Varma about environmental welfare’s future, how India can achieve best practices – and why America proved so resistant to the Kyoto Protocol

Evidence confirms CO2 spikes ended ice age – 8 April 2012, The Hindu

April 9, 2012 by Climate portal editor Leave a Comment

Harvard scientists are helping show the fullest picture of how global spikes in carbon dioxide (CO2) combined to finish off the last ice age 20,000 to 10,000 years ago.
Researchers compiled ice and sedimentary core samples collected from dozens of worldwide locations, and found evidence that while changes in Earth’s orbit may have touched off a warming trend, increases in CO2 played a far more important role in pushing the planet out of the ice age.

Growing food demand strains energy, water supplies – 7 April 2012, National Geographic

April 9, 2012 by Climate portal editor Leave a Comment

The northern region of Gujarat State in western India (map) is semi-arid and prone to droughts, receiving almost all of its rain during the monsoon season between June and September. But for the past three decades, many crop and dairy farms have remained green—even during the dry season.
That’s because farmers have invested in wells and pumps, using massive amounts of electricity to extract water from deep aquifers. The government has artificially propped up the agricultural sector through power subsidies and price supports.

Between contemplation and climate

Whether or not the USA, Europe, the Western world, the industrialised Eastern world (China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan), adhere to or not their paltry promises about being more responsible concerning the factors that lead to climate change, is of very little concern to us. We have never set any store by international agreements on climate […]

The ‘Hindu’, ignorant about weather and climate, but runs down IMD

We find objectionable the report by ‘The Hindu’ daily newspaper accusing the India Meteorological Department of scientific shortcoming (‘IMD gets its August forecast wrong’, 1 September 2016). The report claims that the IMD in June 2016 had forecast that rains for August would be more than usual but that the recorded rain was less than […]
