This is the time for India to show real leadership by promoting its ancient perspectives.Prime minister Manmohan Singh, has confirmed that he will attend the Rio+20 Earth Summit — the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development – on June 20-22. Travelling over 14,000 km from Delhi to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, to discuss with world leaders ‘The Future We Want’, India is poised to take firm action at the summit.

350.org held a worldwide initiative on 5 May 2012 connecting the dots between extreme weather patterns and climate changes around the world. From the melting himalayas to dying coral reefs and forests fires, individuals and activists around the world from USA to Africa and Asia connected the dots in this climate change initiative to protest and educate the world on climate issues and and draw political attention and action.

‘The Island President’: Upbeat Leader Fights for Sinking Maldives – 4 May 2012, The Seattle Times

Climate-change documentaries are almost always disturbing, but “The Island President” communicates a special urgency. The title refers to former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed, whose country — actually 2,000 islands in the Indian Ocean — is quite literally disappearing as he walks the eroding beaches and discusses the devastation caused by the 2004 tsunami.

Greenland Glaciers Speed Up, Swelling Rising Seas – 4 May 2012, Reuters

Some of Greenland’s glaciers are moving about 30 percent faster than they did 10 years ago, contributing to rising global sea levels, but that still may not be enough to reach the most extreme projections for 2100, scientists reported on Thursday.

Under pressure from the international community to cut emissions and support the fight against climate change, India is focusing on implementation of energy efficiency measures in a big way. The country has targeted to save as much as 12,000 mw of electricity by increasing energy efficiency standards of power equipment and appliances and buildings during the current Twelfth Five-Year Plan (April 2012-March 2017).

Global warming is leading to such severe storms, droughts and heat waves that nations such as India should prepare for an unprecedented onslaught of deadly and costly weather disasters, an international panel of climate scientists said in a new report issued March 28. The greatest threat from extreme weather is to highly populated, poor regions of the world, the report warns, but no corner of the globe is immune.
